I was still thinking about the pirate ship I'd seen disappearing toward the open water when I heard something from the beach.
“Man overboard! Man overboard!”
A parrot was circling overhead.
I looked toward the water.
No man.
No pirate ship.
Just a little wooden rowboat drifting slowly out to sea.
I looked back toward the beach.
That was when I noticed the crabs.
There were crabs everywhere.
And they weren't just scurrying around.
They were carrying things.
One was dragging a shoe.
Another was struggling down the beach with what appeared to be a wooden pirate leg.
Boot and all.
I wasn't entirely sure whether to be impressed or concerned.
Then I noticed several more crabs fighting over something near the remains of the village.
A sign.
Or, more accurately, what was left of one.
Two pieces of weathered wood were being pulled in opposite directions by a small army of determined crabs.
I stepped closer.
The crabs did not appreciate my interest.
One of them raised a claw.
I raised an eyebrow.
It raised the other claw.
Apparently, negotiations were going nowhere.
After a brief and surprisingly energetic struggle, I managed to wrestle one piece of the sign away.
The crab immediately tried to take it back.
We had another brief discussion.
I won.
Mostly because I was bigger.
I took the second piece from another particularly stubborn crab and held the two pieces together.
There were only a few letters left, but they were enough.
BLEATWATER
I stared at it for a moment.
Bleatwater.
What a strange name.
I looked back at the ruined village.
The broken dock.
The empty buildings.
The rowboat disappearing toward the horizon.
The crabs carrying away anything they could get their claws on.
And the pirate's wooden leg.
I had a feeling I was going to be here for a while.

🪶 Current Quest
I came to the beach looking for answers about the pirate ship.
Instead, I found:
- A disappearing rowboat
- A very persistent parrot
- Several highly motivated crabs
- A pirate's wooden leg
- Half a village sign
- And the name Bleatwater
I still don't know what happened here.
But at least now I know where I am.
Bleatwater.
What could possibly go wrong?
